Research, Study Skills, Teaching Tools:

http://www.bibliomania.com/index.html
This site has full texts of many works of classical and popular fiction. These texts

are designed to be searchable. The reference section of this site is packed full of stuff

to use. One of the best parts of this site is the section on American Literature. This site also

has A BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY OF ENGLISH LITERATURE and (my favorite) BREWER'S

READER'S HANDBOOK. (You can search the handbook and find literary references and

explanations.)
http://www.ucc.vt.edu/stdsk/stdyhlp.html

This was a thorough and organized site covering 30+ topics ranging from time management to

reading difficult books. This site also provides several different ways to take notes. This

site is geared for upper high school and college students. This is not a flashy site but the

information is excellent.
http://webnz.com/checkers/free2.html
This is a website called Superteach. It offers grammar, mechanics, and writing help and

advice. It also has exercises to do along with answer keys. This site has good practice with

clear explanations and a strong sense of humor.

This site has a "free" download copy of a program called TOTAL RECALL FOR WINDOWS.

This program is designed to help students make flashcards and other memory devices. This

program is geared for high school and college.

http://www.inspiration.com/index.html

This site has a free download copy of a program that allows the user to create graphic

organizers; it also has sample classroom ideas.

http://www.jetlink.net/~massij/wssq/index.shtml

gives permission to use the questions as long as you say that he is the author. Some

Shakespeare Resources:

This site is called Shakey's Place 3-D. It has many of Shakespeare's plays listed with

scene explanations.
http://www.renfaire.com/Language/index.html
This web site is all about the Language in the Renaissance. The tone is light and entertaining.

It puts to rest a lot of the fear of the language. It has information on pronunciation as well

as pronunciation drills. It also has information on vocabulary and grammar. It goes through

the various forms of address as well as insults and cursing. It also has a section on songs of

the times.
http://www.cc.emory.edu/ENGLISH/classes/Shakespeare_Illustrated/Shakespeare.ht ml

This site is maintained by Henry Rusche of Emory University. This site is called Shakespeare

Illustrated and it links Shakespeare with the artwork that is inspired by his lines or plays.

Many plays are listed. There is also information about the artist as well as the play or line

and Shakespeare. "Shakespeare Illustrated, a work in progress, explores nineteenth-century

paintings, criticism and productions of Shakespeare's plays and their influences on one

another."
http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~iandel/index.html a course on teaching Hamlet by Ian Delaney.

American Writers Unit

Assignments

I. Group Newsletter

Work in groups of four. Using the Web sites listed below as your resources, each of you is to

read a short story or poem of Poe’s and write a news article based on it’s theme. Information

about Poe that you find in the biographies you read on-line can also be alluded to (see extra

credit).  The four articles from each group will be combined into a newsletter and then will

be copied and shared with the rest of the class. See attached example of newsletter and

directions for creating the masthead and adding clipart.

Extra Credit: Find three references to Poe’ background/history in the newsletter example.

Extra credit will be given for similar allusions in your newsletters.

Poe Sites

II. Writing Assignment: Mini-Research Paper

You are to find information from the Internet, Reference CD’s, and traditional sources about

one of Poe’s contemporaries and write a short paper which includes biographical information,

famous works written, description of one work, and a discussion of that author’s contribution

to writing and/or writing style. Your paper must include a bibliography. You will need to search for the correct way to cite a Web Page.

Internet Search Strategies

  • Do searches in any search engine, but remember that www.metacrawler.com and

  • www.dogpile.com will search multiple search engines.

  • Try these search words to start: "18th Century American Writers" (or Poets)

  • Check the links in Web sites that are listed; they may lead you to additional sources.

  • Look for references to other authors with whom Poe made acquaintance in the biographies

of Poe’s that you read.

  • Once you find other authors and the dates they lived, do searches on individual writers

who fall in the same general time frame as Poe.

III. PowerPoint Presentations

  • Complete the research on one of Poe's contemporaries as described above.

  • Using the "American Writers Unit Fact-Gathering Questionnaire", you will create a

    multi-media presentation in PowerPoint

Presentation must include all information gathered on the questionnaire.

  • Presentation will also include a title slide, pictures gathered from the Internet, and a

  • reference slide to cite your sources.

  • See PowerPoint Evaluation form for the specific criteria and grading points for each
